Search for missing Greenside learner enters day 3

The search for missing Greenside learner Reza Saloojee has entered its third day at the Vaal Dam.

The search for the Greenside High School learner presumed to have drowned at the Vaal Dam has entered its third day.

Reports state that police divers have been scouring the dam since Sunday afternoon after 18-year-old Reza Saloojee disappeared during a fishing trip with his family.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Xolile Khumalo said they are unaware of any updates.

According to a report by the Laudium Sun, a family friend shared that the learner and his family members were packing up to head home after a day at the dam when Reza went back to the water to retrieve some items. Strong winds reportedly pushed the items further into the water, prompting Reza, who was a good swimmer, to go after them. Tragically, he was suddenly pulled under by the current. Despite his efforts to swim back, the powerful wind and current overwhelmed him, and he disappeared beneath the water. The family friend who witnessed the incident then called the police for help.

Reza’s father, devastated by the incident, shared his anguish. “I got a call from my nephew about my eldest son, Reza, who I last saw on Sunday morning before he left for the dam. Reza was taking a break from his studies for the day. We are still hopeful and praying that Reza is found soon and alive.”

Since the news broke, community members have taken to social media to share their thoughts and prayers, expressing their hope for Reza’s safe return.
