Parktown Boys’ Skyler Joseph dominates at the National Gymnastics Championships
The journey from aspiring break-dancer to gymnastics champion is nothing short of extraordinary.
During the recent September holidays, Parktown Boys’ learner Skyler Joseph took to the stage at the National Gymnastics Championships in Cape Town. Competing above his age group, Skyler didn’t just participate – he dominated. He became the South African national champion in the floor and triumphed in the combined events category, making him a dual national champion.

At just five years into the sport, Skyler’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable. His journey, however, didn’t start in gymnastics. “I initially wanted to do break dancing, but my teacher suggested gymnastics because of my flexibility,” he said. That simple suggestion opened a world of possibilities for Skyler, who now dreams of representing South Africa at the Olympics.

Skyler competed in three key events: rings, vault, and floor. Reflecting on the challenge of the vault, he shared, “The vault was tough because I’m quite short, and I didn’t practice it enough compared to the other apparatus.” Despite these obstacles, his consistent performance across all apparatus earned him the combined event’s title, an accomplishment he values most. “Winning the combined events meant more to me because it showed I kept a high standard across all the events.”
Not one to be fazed by competing against older athletes, Skyler remained focused on his performance. “I didn’t worry too much about who I was up against; I focused on being the best I could be,” he explained. His mindset was clear: Gymnastics is as much about mental resilience as it is about physical ability. “You’re really competing against yourself.”

Skyler credits his success to the hard work and dedication of himself and his coaches. He knows the road ahead is long, with his sights firmly set on future competitions and, ultimately, the Olympics. His advice to aspiring gymnasts? “Listen to your coaches, take every challenge with a smile, and don’t be afraid to work hard.”

With his dual national titles, a relentless work ethic, and the inspiration of Olympic gymnast Caitlin Rooskrantz – who trains alongside him – Skyler is ready to soar even higher.
