Craighall’s Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenues excavation finally receives Johannesburg Roads Agency’s attention
Johannesburg Water will issue a reinstatement order to Johannesburg Roads Agency.
Litter, dead rodents, and broken and exposed cables filled a stalling excavation on Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenues in Craighall on October 22.
The last article written about the hazardous and worsening excavation was six months ago in June this year when the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) confirmed the excavation would be delayed but would be attended to urgently after the cost of repairs was finalised.

“The reinstatement was initially scheduled for the end of May along with a bulk of reinstatements in Region B as part of the blitz programme. However, further assessments revealed that the stormwater pipes at the excavation section are damaged and need to be repaired or replaced,” said JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers.

The publication followed up with the roads agency on October 22 for an update on the excavation and received a response on November 5 after their team had visited the wrong excavation. The agency said they were still in talks with Johannesburg Water and awaited approval on their final response.
Peters-Scheepers said phase one of repairing the excavation was complete. “Johannesburg Water backfilled the hole and will be issuing a reinstatement order to JRA shortly. JRA will be reinstating the paving within the next two weeks.”
