Water supply disruption hits Hyde Park, Dunkeld, and Illovo

Residents in several Johannesburg suburbs face temporary water shortages as repairs are carried out on a major burst pipe, with alternative supply measures now in place.

Residents of Hyde Park, Dunkeld, and Illovo are currently grappling with water shortages due to urgent repairs following a major burst pipe affecting the Parktown 2 reservoir. As of the morning of December 9, affected areas include prominent suburbs such as Houghton, Killarney, Parkwood, Rosebank, and several neighbouring communities.

According to a notice from Johannesburg Water, the disruption is a result of isolating the water supply to deal with the extensive damage to the pipe. The Parktown reservoir has been rendered empty as teams work diligently to restore supply. A representative from the local depot confirmed to Cllr Martin Williams that while repairs are ongoing, further details are being sought before any additional updates can be given.

The good news is that the repairs have now been completed, and teams are in the process of opening the valves to allow water to flow back into the affected areas. In the meantime, alternative water supply measures have been put in place to assist those without access to water services. Water tankers are currently being dispatched to strategic points, including the corner of Kent and Christopherson, as well as along Melville Road between 1st Road and Hurlingham Road in Hyde Park.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated through local channels as the situation evolves, and they are reminded of the importance of conserving water wherever possible during this time of disruption. As efforts continue to restore normalcy, community co-operation and patience will be key in alleviating the impact of this temporary setback. Further updates are expected as the situation develops, so residents are advised to remain vigilant for any additional communications from Johannesburg Water.
