Boundary shake-up: Ward 117 to see changes for 2026 elections
Ward 117 is set to undergo significant changes ahead of the 2026 local government elections, reshaping its boundaries and voter distribution.

Exciting developments are on the horizon for Ward 117 as the Municipal Demarcations Board (MDB) prepares to implement significant boundary changes ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
These adjustments are part of a citywide effort to ensure fair representation, with wards ideally accommodating between 14 000 and
20 000 voters, with a target of 17 000.

Currently, Ward 117 falls short, with only 14 000 voters. However, after the proposed changes, the ward’s voter base will increase to
18 187. To accommodate this growth, the number of voting stations will rise from four to five, improving accessibility for residents.
Ward councillor Tim Truluck expressed optimism about the upcoming changes, stating, “These adjustments are a step forward for Ward 117. The additional voting station and new boundaries will enhance voter participation and representation.”
What’s changing?
The MDB has proposed the following boundary changes for Ward 117:
- Areas removed
The small sections of Dunkeld south of Eastwood Road.
The Craighall Park triangle, including Deansgate and Craigtowne.
Residents in these areas will need to re-register to vote in their new wards.

- Areas added:
The entire IR Griffith voting district in Blairgowrie is currently part of Ward 99.
Voters here will be automatically transferred to Ward 117, with no need to re-register.
These changes are set to take effect for the 2026 elections, with an opportunity for public comments and objections later this year.
What does this mean for you?
If you live in the affected areas, it’s essential to stay informed about how these changes might impact your voting experience. For those needing to re-register, the Independent Electoral Commission will provide detailed guidance in the coming months.
The reconfiguration reflects a broader effort by the MDB to create balanced and functional wards across Johannesburg. As these changes unfold, they promise to shape the future of Ward 117, ensuring its residents are better represented in local government.
