Sandringham High School achieved a 30% increase in 2024 matric results

Sandringham High School principal, Pascal Rekhoto says the school was working towards a 100% pass rate.

Nearly a year after being appointed principal of Sandringham High School, Pascal Rekhoto achieved his goal of improving the Class of 2024’s matric results by 30%.
Rekhoto said the increase from 60% to 90% was a testament to the hard work put in by the learners and teachers. He added the improvement was not a shock because the Class of 2024 had performed well in their exams at the end of each term and worked harder for their finals.

Last year, when the publication interviewed the principal, he stated that he aimed to reinstall discipline and the former prestige of the school. He also wanted to improve learners’ results.
“The 90% pass rate began at the beginning of last year when I met with teachers and decided to take back the school to the high standard it held many years ago. We did this by intensifying extra lessons in the mornings, afternoons, and the holidays,” he said.
Learners also completed baseline assessments at the beginning of the year that gauged where they were academically and revealed weaknesses. The role of the teachers was to help bridge those gaps.
Rekhoto added that teachers were reimbursed for the extra work and hours they put in which motivated them to not leave any stone unturned.

Asked how he would ensure this momentum, he said, “6.24% of the Class of 2024 did not make it, and how we intend on fixing that is to implement a plan that includes focusing on learners who struggled academically and encourage learners who did well to assist struggling learners.”
For example, Rekhoto said to assist learners struggling in economics, an educator was outsourced to improve their understanding of the subject, which led to a grade average of 88%.
“Although we have competent teachers who know what they are doing in the subjects they teach, we sometimes require external assistance, and where required we will start the process of outsourcing educators for necessary subjects at the beginning of the year.”

The principal concluded by saying the school’s ultimate goal was to achieve a 100% pass rate.

“We are working towards the goal from this year.”
