At Wanderers, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation as karateka push themselves in training. Sessions occur every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoon, as well as Saturday mornings, ensuring competitors are in peak form when the tournament kicks off.

For sensei Johan La Grange, the focus is not just on participation but on performance.

“I always hope my team does well,” said La Grange. “There are a few elite members in the squad who I have especially high expectations for. They’ve competed on the world stage, even in Japan, and didn’t do too badly. I’m excited to see how they perform in Gauteng.”

While the elite competitors are undoubtedly a source of pride for the club, the entire team is committed to giving their best. Many of the club’s athletes have been training tirelessly, using their experience at national and international events to refine their skills for the upcoming competition.

The build-up to the championship is intense, with each session offering the perfect opportunity to fine-tune techniques, improve fitness, and perfect the mental game. For the karateka at Wanderers, the tournament is not just a competition but a platform to showcase their dedication and hard work.

“It’s been an incredible journey so far,” said Zander La Grange, a senior athlete at the club. “Every training session is a step closer to our goals, and the energy in the dojo is incredible. We’re ready for whatever comes our way.”

As the date for the championships approaches, the Wanderers Karate Club is poised to compete with some of the province’s best. Whether it’s for a gold medal or personal growth, the club’s athletes are united in their pursuit of excellence, and they’ll be ready to give it their all when they step onto the mat.

With the number of participants expected, this year’s tournament is bound to be an unforgettable event. Stay tuned for updates and results as Wanderers Karate Club aims to make its mark at the SAJKA Gauteng Championships.
