Parktown Girls learner paddles to victory and secures Gauteng spot
A young paddler has made waves in the canoeing world, securing first place in three events.
In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Alexia Smedmor, a learner from Parktown High School for Girls, dominated the recent Gauteng Kayak Sprint Championship.
Alexia won all three events she competed in – the 5km, 500m, and 200m races in the U18 category. These impressive results have earned her a well-deserved place on the Gauteng Canoe Union team.

Alexia’s journey into the sport began in 2019 during a Grade 5 camp at St Peter’s Girls Primary, where she first tasted water sports. “We went white-water rafting on the Vaal River, and the thrill of the rapids hooked me,” she recalled. That experience sparked a passion for kayaking, and by her Grade 8 year, she had joined the Dabumanzi Canoe Club.

At just 15, Alexia began competing seriously in 2023, racing in the U16 category. But this recent competition was a step up, as she found herself racing alongside seasoned U23 women. “It was a great experience to compete against athletes much older than me. It helped me push my limits.”
The day was challenging, especially the 5km race, which included a portage, where athletes must carry their boats. “The 5km was a good way to start the day and set my mindset. I focused on keeping my technique solid and managing my heart rate.”
Her 500m race was the highlight of the day, thanks to her perfect technique and focus on breathing. However, the 200m race proved to be the most difficult. “My start was not as strong as I hoped, but I focused on catching up with the competition.

Despite the intensity of the races, Alexia managed to stay calm, refusing to let nerves interfere with her performance. “The toughest part of the day was keeping a positive mindset and not letting the nervousness take over.”
In addition to her rigorous training with the Dabumanzi Canoe Club, Alexia credits her running crew, JP/Fourways runners, for giving her the fitness foundation needed for success. “They’ve helped me build a strong fitness base, and I also ensure I kayak regularly during the week.”
Alexia is grateful for the support and inspiration she’s found in the kayaking community. “The people I’ve met, from river legends to surf ski champions, have inspired me to keep pushing forward.”

Looking ahead, Alexia has big aspirations for the future. “I hope to continue competing in sprint and marathon kayaking, and one day, I’d love to represent South Africa in the sport.”
Her advice to fellow athletes is: ”Get involved in the community for invaluable support and always give your best. Be proud of your effort, no matter where you place.”
With her dedication and passion, Alexia will make waves in the kayaking world for years to come.
