7 arrested for drunk driving in Norwood SAPS and JMPD joint operation.

The suspects, arrested for drunk driving during a joint operation between SAPS and JMPD, appeared in the Hillbrow Magistrate's Count and were granted bail of R1 500 each, pending results of the blood tests.

In a successful operation on February 21 by Norwood SAPS, at least seven people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during a roadblock held at the corner of Louis Botha Avenue and 5th Street in Orange Grove.

Members of the Norwood SAPS and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) conducted the operation, which started at approximately 14:00. It was a two-phase initiative, with the first phase focusing on crime prevention and the second phase targeting drunk drivers.

Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha, the spokesperson for Norwood SAPS, expressed his satisfaction with the operation’s success. “We were pleased with the co-operation and respect shown by the community during the crime prevention phase. The second phase, aimed at removing dangerous drivers from the road, was also a success,” Masotsha said.

Seven individuals were arrested for driving under the influence, with one suspect facing an additional charge of reckless and negligent driving. This individual collided with a higher authority vehicle during the operation. All arrested suspects were charged and appeared in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court on February 24, where they were granted bail of R1 500 each while awaiting the results of blood tests.

Masotsha commended the strong partnership between SAPS and JMPD, highlighting the importance of collaboration in ensuring road safety. “We are committed to continuing these operations to keep our roads safe for all,” he added.
