Body found in stream at Paterson Park, police ask for assistance in identifying the deceased
A sombre start to the new year as a body was discovered at Paterson Park in Norwood, sparking concerns over safety and neglect in the area.
Just two days into the new year, at approximately 12:00, SAPS responded to a grim call from a concerned public member. A male body, believed to be about 50 years old, was found floating in a stream in Paterson Park.
Norwood police spokesperson Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha confirmed the discovery and urged the community to assist in identifying the deceased. “We urge community members, especially those who reported missing loved ones, to come forward and speak to Detective Mkhulise Ngonyama,” he said.
The body remains unidentified, and an inquest docket has been opened at the Norwood Police Station. Investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Community voices raise alarm
The incident has drawn attention to broader concerns about safety and neglect at Paterson Park. Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett expressed her distress at the situation. “It is extremely concerning and distressing. It’s a sad indictment of the current state of Johannesburg that such tragedies occur,” she said.
Simon Ramara, from a security guard for the park from Khaume Security, described the unsettling discovery. “After the heavy rains on New Year’s Day, I took my usual walk through the park. I expected to see the usual – rubbish and overgrown bamboo and grass – but I saw this tragic sight instead. It seems the body was washed into the park from another area.”

Ramara also highlighted ongoing challenges with the park’s maintenance. Despite recent construction work, the park remains inaccessible to the public due to overgrown grass and a lack of infrastructure to ensure safety. “Funds need to be raised for a clear-view fence around the stream to protect children playing in the park. It’s simply not safe yet,” he explained, fearing another tragedy taking place due to the lack of safety measures.
