Norwood residents urged to park safely as car thefts surge

Car theft and break-ins are on the rise in Norwood, prompting police to urge residents to take extra precautions.

The Norwood SAPS has raised serious concerns over the alarming increase in thefts from and out of motor vehicles in the area.
Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha, spokesperson for Norwood SAPS, has urged residents to take extra precautions to protect their belongings and vehicles.

“It is deeply concerning that so many people leave their vehicles unattended on the streets with valuables inside,” said Masotsha. “We strongly advise community members not to leave any valuable items in their cars, as this makes them an easy target for criminals.”

Police have noted a pattern where criminals are taking advantage of poorly secured vehicles, often breaking windows or using signal-jamming devices to gain access. Masotsha further emphasised the importance of safe parking choices.

“We encourage residents to park in areas with CCTV surveillance so that police can review footage to understand how crimes are being committed. Better yet, if possible, park inside your yard or a secured area to reduce the risk of theft,” he added.

The police are also calling on the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.

“If you see someone loitering in the street or behaving suspiciously, report it. Police will respond swiftly, especially if the person is found carrying car-breaking tools.”
Residents can report suspicious or illegal activities by calling the SAPS Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111 or contacting the Norwood SAPS relief commanders at 071 675 6057.

The Norwood SAPS urges everyone to play their part in preventing crime by being alert and working together as a community.
