Johannesburg City Library is officially open to the public
Johannesburg Development Agency spearheaded critical upgrades to the Johannesburg City Library, which was reopened to the public on March 21.
In commemoration of South African Library Week, the City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Dada Morero, together with Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) CEO Themba Mathibe and JDA board chairperson Julias Maputla, officially reopened the Johannesburg City Library on March 21.
In attendance of the momentous occasion were residents, literary enthusiasts, and Johannesburg Heritage Foundation supporters.

Mathibe confirmed that the library would be operational from March 24. He explained that ahead of the partial reopening, the agency spearheaded critical upgrades to the facility, including electrical reticulation, fire safety enhancements, waterproofing, and servicing of generators.

“Significant work was completed to ensure compliance with emergency fire safety regulations. The scope of work for the first phase included roof repairs, fire protection systems, and building compliance measures to meet Emergency Management Services by-laws and National Building Regulations.”

He added that the upgrades would ensure the library remains a vital cultural and educational hub for the community, with improved safety features such as fire doors, fire-rated walls, and a new fire water tank.

Moreo noted that the reopening of the library was an integral part of the constitution. “This occasion is a demonstration of our dedication to inclusivity, life-long learning, and digital empowerment. The reopening of the library is an important fundamental right enshrined in our constitution to ensure access and justice for the community, and an example of our commitment to the principles that underpin a library’s vital role in society.”

Johannesburg Heritage Foundation’s honorary life president Flo Bird was pleased that the library was operational again, after four years of being closed. “It is good to see, and be in a refurbished library. It is also good to know that learners and students have a quiet place to work in, and can use the available resources provided by the library.”
Morero confirmed that phase two of the library would be open to the public on August 30
