Parkview blanket drive encourages community participation

The fundraiser, co-run by St Columba's outreach team, St Francis, Morningside Rotary Club, and Parkview residents, runs until next month.

Autumn is in full swing, and before we know it, the country will be in the middle of a cold winter, which is bad news for vulnerable communities on Johannesburg’s streets, where shelter is at a premium.

With this in mind, the St Columba’s outreach team has joined forces with members of its congregation, St Francis, Morningside Rotary Club, and residents of Parkview, to raise funds to buy at least 300 blankets to distribute to those in need this winter. The aim is for the fundraiser to run until the middle of May.

Thanks to Rotary’s involvement, the involved parties benefit from a bulk deal which has been negotiated with the Sesli Textile Factory. This sees the parties paying R100 for a good quality blanket.

Cash donations, or good quality pre-owned blankets, can be dropped off at St Columba’s Church on Sundays, or handed into the office during the week. St Columba’s will put in purchase orders to Morningside Rotary Club, who will in turn order the blankets from the factory as per the negotiated agreement. St Columba’s will receive the deliveries on behalf of its donors.
St Columba’s recipients will be customers of the daily soup kitchen, the Bethany Home, and the Frida Hartley Shelter.
