The Sports against Crime initiative brought Paterson Park to life on April 28, as youth, local organisations, and government stakeholders united in a vibrant display of community resilience and collaboration.

The programme was launched to use sports as a powerful tool to prevent crime, empower young people, and strengthen community ties. By providing recreational alternatives and promoting healthy lifestyle choices, the initiative worked to channel the energy of young participants into positive outlets, encouraging awareness and social responsibility.
Key stakeholders in planning and executing the event included SAPS, the Community Police Forum (CPF), Lifeline, JMPD, the Health Department, and the City of Joburg. Local organisations also played an essential role, with participation from Bright Spark Foundation SA (Welcome Witbooi), Empowered Now Foundation (Elias Lacrosse Mamabolo), Norwood Fit Fusion (coaches Mposh and Ashley), Find Your Dream (Ma’am Mimi), Women Developing Others, and Divine Intervention Approach led by Apostle Prince.
The day featured various activities, including a 5km walk that promoted social cohesion and community engagement. Netball and soccer matches fostered teamwork and friendly competition, while aerobics sessions supported physical fitness and well-being.
The collaboration between SAPS, the CPF, and the YCPD was central to the event’s success, ensuring it was well-resourced, well-organised, and impactful. The cooperation of local organisations contributed significantly by aligning their goals with the theme of crime prevention and youth development.

Challenges during planning and execution were addressed through improved communication and regular engagement with local leaders. Adjustments were made throughout the process to ensure participation and inclusivity, demonstrating a flexible and responsive approach to community needs.
Feedback from community members and participants reflected appreciation for the event’s atmosphere and organisation. The seamless coordination among stakeholders was highlighted as a key factor in the initiative’s success.
Looking forward, the YCPD plans to host similar events at the Multi-Purpose Recreational Centre in Norwood. There are also intentions to broaden future initiatives to involve even more interaction between stakeholders and community members, sustaining momentum and deepening impact.
The Sports Against Crime event is a testament to the power of unity, sport, and proactive engagement in building safer communities.
