Johannesburg man arrested for illicit gold trading in Sandringham
Police seize an estimated R900 000 worth of illegal gold and over R300 000 cash in major operation.
On May 22, a 33-year-old man was taken into custody in Johannesburg after a detailed investigation into illegal gold dealing. The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, together with K9 units from Johannesburg and Benoni, worked tirelessly to bring him in.

It all started when police received information about someone allegedly dealing in illicit gold around Sandringham. Acting on this tip-off, officers spotted the suspect’s vehicle on Swindler Road and Lee Street. The officers then followed the suspect to another property on Sandler Street where they stopped and searched the car. They found 5 grams of illegal gold and R8 100 in cash. When they conducted a thorough search of the property, they uncovered a massive 600 grams of illicit gold and an additional R300 000 in cash.

All in all, police seized gold worth an estimated R900 000, along with over R300 000 in cash. The suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on May 26.
