The CPF’s chairperson, Wayne Preston, said: “The CPF acknowledges the efforts of the Norwood police, under the guidance of Colonel Logan Govender. There has been a major turnaround, and the efforts displayed by Norwood SAPS, together with various private stakeholders and private security, are bearing fruit.”

Responding to the Justice, Crime Prevention, and Security (JCPS) Cluster launching a 90-day gender-based violence and femicide (GBV+F) blitz, which began on May 1, Preston said the CPF is happy to see that the JCPS Cluster recognised the urgency to deal with an embattled, backlogged justice system, and hopes that the recommendations and measures to follow will fast track court cases and get justice to serve its purpose.

“Unemployment, and the misuse of alcohol, is playing a major role in the rise of GBV+F. It’s even worse to see that many of these crimes involve children. The issue is clearly based on social behaviour, which we urgently need to address. These crimes should be properly studied, segmented, and addressed, according to the analysis. It should be a permanent part of our policing and social services.”

The chairperson noted that Norwood’s CPF had an active youth desk, and frequently hosted social development events. This helps children and young adults to identify other avenues of release or involvement, teaches them responsibility, and builds their confidence.

Preston concluded that he trusted that the decision to create an operational response service, in the recent release of the fourth-quarter statistics, was due to the CPF’s involvement, and willingness to respond immediately to crimes.

“The CPF will always play a role, regardless of the fact that they were not mentioned in the organigram, as the CPF is the only recognised private or civilian body to operate along with SAPS, as its part of its constitution.”
