Kingsmead College takes police victim room mural with both hands

Kingsmead College aims to continue supporting Rosebank Police Station's victim room, by replacing the books and toys that hope victims will feel comfortable taking.

Kingsmead College, the Rosebank Community Policing Forum (CPF), Rosebank Management District (RMD), and other stakeholders unveiled Rosebank Police Station’s newly painted mural and victim room.

Kingsmead College’s director of service Karen Landi said she couldn’t be more proud of the girls who painted the mural. “It was a passion project for them. They were intentional about the design of the mural. In terms of our partnership with the police station it is essential that we see how we can join hands in uplifting the community, and I think, as Kingsmead, we are in the fortunate position that we are able to assist our sponsors.”

Landi added that the school would be returning to the police station once a month, to replenish the books and toys provided, because the school hopes children who visit the room take them.

Kingsmead College learner Amelia Laburn said painting the mural at the police station would play a role in making the victims, who visited the police station, better, because the colours that were used on the mural were purposefully chosen to be warm and friendly.

CPF chairperson Dr Bruce Young expressed his gratitude to Kingsmead College. “As the CPF, we are dependent on the support from the community. It is unfortunate that the maintenance of the police station is not something the government gets around to. Victim support is an important part of what we need to do.”

RMD’s precinct manager Mikhaela Donaldson said the management district was constantly looking at how to engage with its residents, community, role players, and stakeholders, and was committed to ensuring that the precinct is a welcoming, safe, and clean part of the neighbourhood. “It’s important that our police station is a reflection of our community. For this project we worked closely with Kingsmead College to identify what could be done to make the victim corner decent, and we were pleasantly surprised with how the school grabbed the challenge with both hands.”

The Rosebank Police Station’s Visual Policing (Vispol) Commander Ndivhuwo Mulaudzi expressed his gratitude to the CPF and stakeholders. “They have changed the limelight of the station, which looks better, and is more friendly and inviting to victim’s who’ll be using the room.”
