11th Avenue and 4th Street excavation is worsening due to rainfall

11th Avenue and 4th Street excavation is a result of a broken stormwater drain.

The excavation that is more than three months old on 11th Avenue and 4th Street in Houghton not only remains a danger to motorists and pedestrians, but is expanding and becoming deeper from the water it is collecting after heavy rainfalls.

The Gazette visited the excavation on September 29 and was met with rubble, cement pipes and a deep excavation filled with water from the weekend of September 27 rainfall.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson, Nombuso Shabalala, said, “The existing Johannesburg Roads Agency stormwater drain was damaged in the process of repairs. A job card will be created and forwarded to the JRA to do the re-instatement.”

The Gazette has sent JRA questions regarding the completion of the stormwater repairs and will update the article with its response.
