Guild Cottage reflects on a year of resilience and community spirit

From courage to compassion, Guild Cottage honours the strength of the girls in its care and the community that supports them.

In the quiet streets of Parktown West, Guild Cottage stands as more than just a home. It is a sanctuary where hope is restored and courage quietly blooms.

As the year draws to a close, the team at Guild Cottage paused to reflect on the journey, the milestones, and the unwavering support that has carried them through another year of remarkable work.

Tasneem Bhula, the executive director of Guild Cottage, leads a team dedicated to healing girls who have faced trauma.

“Every day, I am humbled by their bravery,” said Bhula. Founded in 1907 to support orphans of the Anglo-Boer War, Guild Cottage is now South Africa’s only specialist residential treatment centre for sexually abused girls aged six to 18. Each child receives psychological care, family therapy, education, and the opportunity to rediscover trust and purpose.

Reflecting on the year, the team highlighted five defining moments of 2025. Community support stood out as a beacon, reminding everyone that generosity and unity can lift even the heaviest hearts.

The launch of a vegetable garden, humble in its beginnings, symbolised growth and sustenance, nourishing both body and spirit. Most inspiring of all has been the resilience of the girls themselves, whose courage and determination continue to uplift every corner of the home.

Faith has also played a quiet but profound role. The power of God has been a guiding light, offering comfort and strength through the most challenging moments. And throughout it all, the Guild Cottage team has remained steadfast, committed to providing a safe and loving environment no matter the obstacles.

Looking ahead, Guild Cottage is inviting the community to continue this journey of support. With the new school year on the horizon, the centre has shared a wish list to help the girls thrive in 2026.

Among the items needed are stationery, basic school uniform items such as white and black socks, blue tights, shirts, grey school pants, PE sneakers, as well as groceries, school snacks, and festive treats for the girls. The ages of the girls range from nine to 17, and every contribution will directly impact their day-to-day lives and futures.

As the year comes to a close, the team at Guild Cottage extends heartfelt gratitude to all who have walked this path alongside them. They celebrate the courage of the girls, the dedication of their staff, and the generosity of a community that continues to stand with them.

“Thanks to the support of everyone who believes in our mission, we end the year with hope and renewed determination. Together, we are building brighter futures.”
