Guild Cottage girls grow hope through new vegetable garden

A new vegetable garden at Guild Cottage is doing more than growing food; it’s restoring hope and dignity for young girls who’ve endured immense hardship.

In a quiet corner of Parktown West, soil is being turned and seedlings carefully planted, as a small garden begins to flourish with purpose. Guild Cottage, a home for girls who are Wards of the Court after enduring abuse, is facing tough financial times, but a new initiative is bringing both nourishment and hope.

St Columba’s Kindness Kitchen has partnered with Andrew Murray NG Church’s Harvest of Hope project to grow fresh vegetables, restore dignity, and teach resilience. On October 29, the first seedlings were planted early in the morning to escape the heat of the day, marking the beginning of a project that promises to benefit the girls and their carers in both practical and meaningful ways.

This week, the garden is set to expand even further. The Furstenberg family has donated 100 bags of fertiliser and topsoil, while Cheesman and Tony Bensusan will deliver trays of tomato and spinach seedlings.

Tasneem Bhula from Guild Cottage praised the project’s impact.
“I am extremely proud of the dedication and effort being put into this project by our child and youth care worker, Emily Molefe, and the girls who have been assisting her,” she said. “The vegetable garden they’ve cultivated is more than just a source of nourishment; it stands as a powerful symbol of hope and resilience during this challenging time for the Guild. Their commitment and teamwork reflect the spirit of growth and healing that we all strive for.”

Derek Cheesman from the Harvest of Hope project said that tomatoes will be the first crop, followed by spring onions, chillies, and spinach. Each tomato plot could produce up to 10 tomatoes, which will be cooked, pureed, and frozen for the kitchen. Weekly planting schedules and careful resource management are helping to ensure a steady supply of fresh produce.

Beyond the practical benefits, the garden teaches patience, care, and the value of teamwork. Every sprouting leaf and ripening fruit carries a message of hope, a reminder that growth is possible, even in the most challenging circumstances. At Guild Cottage, the garden is more than just soil and seedlings; it is a living testament to the strength, resilience, and courage of the girls who call it home.
