Parktown Boys’ bowler on the rise

Grade 11 cricketer Abhay Patel is quietly building a name for himself as a disciplined, mentally tough bowler with big ambitions for the future.

It was not trophies or scorecards that first hooked Abhay Patel on cricket; it was the feeling.

The crack of the ball, the energy in the field, and the shared passion of teammates chasing the same goal drew him in from a young age, and that love has only deepened with time.

A Grade 11 learner at Parktown Boys’ High School, Abhay has established himself as a passionate cricketer and a reliable bowler, who thrives in the longer formats of the game. For him, extended matches mean more opportunities to contribute, to problem-solve, and to back his team when it matters most.

Cricket, he says, has shaped far more than his sporting ability. The game’s demanding nature has taught him discipline, patience, and mental strength, qualities he carries beyond the boundary ropes.

Those lessons were tested early on, when he struggled with his batting, and found himself placed in the B team. Those struggles were compounded by moments of doubt, fuelled by coaches who failed to see his potential.

Rather than walking away, Abhay pushed back. Support from his parents, particularly his father, became crucial during difficult periods.

Today, match days still begin with music, to settle his nerves, and conversations with family to centre his focus, before final guidance from his coach.

One of his most memorable matches came against Hoërskool Noordheuwel’s U15/16 side. “The game was almost over when I came out to bat. I could hear my teammates cheering me on. It’s a moment I’ll never forget.” Although the team didn’t win, the intensity and passion on the field left a lasting mark on him.

Since that day, Abhay has gone on to earn provincial honours at the U15 level and recently received a school cricket award, a recognition that reinforced his belief in his abilities
Looking ahead, Abhay has clear goals: Captaining his side next year, representing South Africa one day, and guiding younger players through the same challenges he once faced, with belief, resilience, and heart.
