Young runner finds his stride at Parktown Boys’ High School

Inspired by family legacy and driven by discipline, Eli Summers is carving out a promising future on the track.

Grade 11 learner Eli Summers, from Parktown Boys’ High School, is steadily making a name for himself on the athletics track, competing in the 800m and 1 500m for the school’s athletics team.

His journey into the sport began in Grade 8, sparked by gentle encouragement from his father and stories rooted in a proud Comrades Marathon legacy.

Although athletics was common at his primary school, it was never a main focus for him. That changed when Eli first tried cross country, where he discovered a love for running that soon carried over onto the track. “Once I started racing, something clicked. I realised how much I enjoyed pushing myself.”

Eli balances private long-distance training sessions with structured school practices, a routine that recently paid off with a second-place finish in the 800m and 1 500m at Germiston Stadium. He also plays football, crediting athletics for sharpening his fitness, discipline, and mental toughness on the pitch.

When races get tough, Eli leans on the support of his teammates and coaches, reminding himself of his goals and who he represents. Inspired by Comrades legend Bruce Fordyce, he dreams of one day taking on the iconic ultra-marathon himself. For now, his focus is clear: Earning athletic colours and competing at university level.
