Parktown Boys’ teen pursues tennis passion and leadership
From picking up a racquet at the age of three to chasing school colours and captaincy, Grade 11 learner Jethro Gibson is driven by passion, discipline and the simple joy of competing.
Jethro Gibson’s relationship with tennis began almost as soon as he could walk. At just 3-years-old, he was already on court, learning to swing a racquet and fall in love with a sport that would shape much of his childhood and teenage years.
Now a Grade 11 learner at Parktown Boys’ High School, Jethro continues to play with the same enthusiasm, fuelled by a deep appreciation for both the individual challenge and the team spirit the game offers.

“I love that tennis pushes you to rely on yourself, but also gives you a sense of belonging when you’re part of a team,” he said. That balance, he believes, has helped him grow not only as a player but also as a person.
His strongest weapon on court is his first serve, a skill he has refined through hours of repetition, focus and technical adjustment.
One of his most memorable moments came during a fiercely contested match to determine third place. The pressure was intense, but he thrived on the challenge, drawing confidence from his preparation and the support of those around him. Winning a tennis league for his club stands out as another highlight, a moment that reinforced his belief in teamwork and perseverance.

While his school commitments have limited his participation in Tennis South Africa tournaments, Jethro has remained dedicated to his development within the school and club environment. His ambitions are firmly rooted at Parktown Boys’, where he hopes to earn full colours and one day lead the team as captain.
Despite his obvious talent, he is realistic about his future. With school commitments overlapping competitive tennis pathways, he does not plan to pursue the sport as a professional career. Instead, he sees tennis as a lifelong companion, something he will continue to enjoy recreationally long after his school days are over.
For now, Jethro is focused on making the most of every training session and match, driven by a simple love for the game. In doing so, he is carving out his own journey, one defined not by trophies alone, but by growth, discipline and enduring passion.
