Longstanding excavation continues to pose a danger

The continued argument between City Power and Johannesburg Water about the excavation on Rothesay and Jan Smuts avenues in Craighall has led to a car plunging into the hole, leading to further calls for the resolution to come sooner rather than later.

An urgent call as gone out to fix a longstanding excavation on Jan Smuts and Rothesay avenues.

This is after the recent incident of a vehicle plunging into the excavation during the wet weather on February 13.

Ward 90 councillor Renate van Onselen, who rushed to the scene, reiterated the urgency for the excavation to be repaired, and for power to be restored to the traffic lights.

The excavation is a result of the ongoing engagements between Johannesburg Water and City Power to resolve the water leak without compromising or damaging electricity infrastructure.

City Power’s spokesperson Isaac Mangena noted: “City Power’s role is to ensure a safe and co-ordinated approach, including a possible power isolation, once Johannesburg Water has completed its assessment and is ready to proceed with repairs.”

Mangena added that a notification date for Craighall Park residents to be alerted about a possible power isolation has not yet been confirmed.

When approached for comment Johannesburg Water simply referred us to City Power. We have contacted City Power for further comment and will publish it as soon as it is received.
