Parktown Boys athlete chases middle-distance glory

Inspired by his father’s love for running, Eli Summers is building confidence and discipline through middle-distance athletics while dreaming of one day running the Comrades Marathon

For Eli Summers, athletics has become more than just a sport; it is a space where he challenges himself, builds confidence, and continues to chase bigger goals.

The Parktown Boys’ High School Grade 11 learner competes in middle-distance events, specialising in the 800m and 1500m races. However, his athletics journey began with cross-country running, a discipline he still competes in today.

What started as a simple introduction to the sport soon developed into a deeper passion for running.

His father’s influence played a significant role in shaping his interest in athletics. A Comrades Marathon runner himself, he often shared stories about the sport, while a cousin who also competed helped further spark his curiosity about running.

Since then, Eli has embraced a disciplined training routine. His schedule includes long-distance runs every Saturday, private training sessions twice a week, and additional individual training when he is not participating in other sports. “My father always enjoyed athletics and encouraged me to give it a try because he believed I was quite fast.”

One of his most memorable achievements so far came recently when he secured second place in the 800m and 1500m race at Germiston Stadium during a school’s athletics event.

While athletics demands physical endurance, he believes the mental side of the sport is just as important. “I remind myself of my goals and who I am representing. That helps me push through both the physical and mental challenges.”

Support from teammates and coaches also plays an important role in his performance. The encouragement before and during races helps calm nerves and keeps him motivated.

Outside athletics, Eli is also passionate about football, where he plays as a right winger. His training on the track has improved his speed and stamina, which he says gives him an advantage on the field

Looking ahead, Eli hopes to earn his athletics colours at school, and eventually compete at a university level. Inspired by legendary South African runners Bruce Fordyce and Wayde van Niekerk, he also dreams of one day taking part in the iconic Comrades Marathon.

For now, the young athlete remains focused on improving his times and continuing to grow with every race he runs.
