The old Parkhurst Bowling Club, once a lively community landmark, was the scene of a large-scale joint operation on October 8, as authorities and private security worked together to remove illegal structures and restore order to the neglected property.
The coordinated effort, led by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) in partnership with SAPS, SCP Security, Crum B, and other stakeholders, aimed to bring the site back in line with municipal by-laws.
According to officials, the operation was conducted peacefully, with no resistance from those occupying the area. Officers carefully dismantled several makeshift structures that had recently reappeared on the property, with strong teamwork ensuring safety and calm throughout the morning.

SCP Security head Clive Maher commended the joint effort, describing it as an example of how cooperation can lead to meaningful results. “This morning, a highly successful joint operation took place at the Parkers Bowling Club, involving JMPD, Crum, and various security stakeholders,” said Maher.

“The mission focused on removing illegal structures and enhancing community safety. It was carried out peacefully and efficiently, showing exceptional collaboration among all role players.
“Our teams remain committed to assisting SAPS and JMPD with patrols, manpower, and regular feedback to authorities. We meet weekly with all partners to discuss areas that need attention.
“This operation sends a clear message that illegal activities and the erection of unlawful structures will not be tolerated. Together, we’ll continue to prioritise the safety and compliance of our communities.”
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that the operation formed part of an ongoing by-law enforcement drive. “Illegal structures and unauthorised occupation were confirmed on the site,” said Fihla.
“The outcome was the demolition and removal of these structures by municipal teams. The operation involved a multi-disciplinary approach, with private security assisting, municipal partners overseeing logistics, and the CPF providing local intelligence.

“To prevent reoccupation, a vigilant monitoring strategy has been implemented. Frequent joint patrols will ensure the long-term safety and security of the community.”
The Parkhurst Bowling Club has long been a point of concern for residents. Once a vibrant gathering space, it has faced years of deterioration and recurring illegal occupation, despite redevelopment plans announced last year.
While many as a positive step toward restoring the site welcomed the latest operation, some community members remain concerned about the social challenges posed by ongoing displacement and the lack of long-term housing alternatives.
Authorities have confirmed that regular enforcement and monitoring will continue to prevent further illegal activity, part of a broader effort to revive the site while balancing safety, compassion, and community wellbeing.
