It’s that time of the year again when we explore our top five school articles for 2022.

The Gazette’s team has worked throughout the year to bring you breaking news first, tell those sweet stories, challenge the hard topics and celebrate top achievements.

Number 1: Parktown High School for Girls hosts 18 schools for sports festival

The annual Spring Sports Festival hosted by Parktown High School for Girls was a success. The school in Parkview hosted 18 other schools for the event from October 14–15. Parktown Girls headmistress Tracey Megom said, “We can’t deny that sport is such a fantastic way to bring people with a common interest together and we welcome you in the spirit of healthy competition, friendship and camaraderie.”

First-place winners were as follows:

  • Hockey – Sports GwaanzNetball – Trinity House Randpark Ridge
  • Soccer – Parktown High School for Girls
  • Tennis – St Mary’s High School, Waverley
  • Water polo – Reddam House Bedfordview
  • Cross country – Parktown High School for Girls

Number 2: Maryvale Primary celebrates Catholic Schools Week

Learners and teachers at Maryvale Primary School in Orchards this year gathered to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. Headmistress Kirsten Smith began the week with a thanksgiving assembly where children listened attentively while loyal ancillary staff related their experiences at the school. Four dedicated staff members: Joel Malatji, Nkululeleko Mabaso, Sophy Malatji and Thabile Hlongwan have been employed at the school for a combined total of 89 years. Joel is in his 37th year of service followed by Hlongwan with 25 years, Sophy with 20 years and Mabaso with seven years.

Number 3: Partner schools in Parktown and Soweto revive longstanding tradition

Two days filled with games, crafts and lots of laughter were had by learners of partner schools in Parktown and Soweto.

After two years of not being able to uphold a longstanding tradition, the Deutsche Internationale Schule Grade 4 learners were once again able to welcome learners and teachers from their Soweto partner school, Thabisile Primary School.

The Grade 4 learners from Thabisile were dressed in their traditional clothing for the welcoming song which they sang upon arrival.
