Virtuoso violinist Mira heading off to Wits

An exceptionally supportive environment with a culture of closeness and encouragement at St Mary's School led to Mira being one of the top achievers in her matric class.

Staying focused and practising self-discipline were keys to Mira Kathawaroo doing as well as she did in the final matric exams.

The top achiever at St Mary’s School in Waverley said she is proud of herself for achieving ten distinctions.

“Time management was critical for me, and I planned for breaks between study sessions. I also concentrated on getting sufficient sleep and eating healthy food.”

She explains that she turned off her phone when she was studying and tried to create an environment that was as stress-free and calm as possible.

“I am relieved to have matriculation behind me, and I look forward to the experience of being a university student at Wits, but I will miss being the head of music.”

Kathawaroo is a gifted violinist and was St Mary’s head of music in her matric year.

“Music became integral to my study routine for the matric finals; playing the violin is good mental and physical exercise, and practicing on my violin was my preferred way of taking breaks from studying.”

Her advice to youngsters starting high school this year is to open themselves to new experiences.

“Do as much as you can to expose yourself to everything that high school offers; meet new people and make new friends; also try not to isolate yourself; and don’t be fearful of the opportunities you now have.”

Kathawaroo said she will always remember and treasure her time at St Mary’s.
