Andre’s Taekwondo Academy participants make history

Andre’s Taekwondo Academy returned home victorious last year with two world champions from the American Taekwondo Association (ATA) World Championship held in Phoenix, Arizona.

Lucky Mashego and Faiyaz Khan made history as the first black and Indian men respectively to achieve fourth-degree black belts in ATA South Africa.

Chief instructor and owner of the academy in Norwood Andre van Tonder expressed his immense pride in the two men for their accomplishment.

“This achievement is not only a testament to their hard work and dedication but also to the inclusive nature of ATA South Africa. Mashego and Khan’s success paves the way for more diversity and representation in martial arts, inspiring future generations to pursue their passions,” he said.

Mashego said he was proud to be a part of the historic moment and hoped it inspired others to pursue their dreams and break barriers.

Khan echoed the same sentiments. “This achievement is not only for me but for my community as a whole. I hope it encourages more people from diverse backgrounds to take up martial arts.”
