Ward 117 community elects two committee members

The Ward 117 committee supplementary elections were held at the Parkhurst Recreational Centre.

Ward 117 residents were invited by the Speaker of Council for the City of Johannesburg, Colleen Makhubele, to nominate and elect ward committee members.

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck, in turn, invited residents who attended the supplementary elections on June 19 at the Parkhurst Recreation Centre.

He said the elected ward committee members would fill the vacant sectors – public safety and community development. The two duly elected committee members for Ward 117 were Lesley Colman and Colin Braude.
Truluck said, “I prefer candidates who are already active in the ward and the elected candidates definitely fit those criteria.”

Ward 117 administrator Buhle Tsotetsi said the city gives a R1 000 stipend to the elected ward committee members.
She commended the Ward 117 committee members for always fullfiling the duties required of them. Tsotetsi said, “If lights are not working, pipes burst, and so on, ward committee members assist the councillor in bringing these to the attention of the relevant entities.” She said they would give sector training to the ward committee members as well.

According to information shared by the South African Local Government Association, ward committee members;

  • Organise and attend meetings of the ward.
  • Submit and table reports and plans addressing the needs and priorities of the ward and to provide feedback on the functions rendered by the municipality that impacts on the ward, in order to formulate recommendations to be submitted to the municipality through the ward councillor;
  • Facilitate feedback on matters raised with the council through the ward councillor.
  • Participate in plans and programmes of municipalities and other spheres of government impacting the ward’s development.
