19 suspects arrested in hijacked building in Highlands North

At least nineteen members of the public brought to books for public violence and trespassing in Highlands North.

The Norwood police arrested 19 people for public violence.

The spokesperson Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha said on September 21 at about 10:00, a sheriff from the court of law was being escorted by the Norwood police to carry out an eviction order.

“Upon arrival at an alleged hijacked building of flats in Highlands North, they found a group of people chanting and toy-toying inside the said building at the gate inside the property. When the sheriff was being escorted by the police towards the gate to address the crowd, those tenants started throwing stones and bottles of beer hitting the police. This was until the public order police threw [smoke] grenades to disperse the crowd but they still kept on fighting with the police,” said Masotsha.

He added minimum force was used by firing rubber bullets to overpower the crowd and 19 were arrested for public violence.

He said all the arrested suspects would appear in court in due course.
