Local charities benefit as Parkview Christmas market shines bright

The Parkview Christmas Market brought festive joy and community spirit together, all while supporting local charities in need.

The Parkview Christmas Market, held from November 22 to 24 at George Hay Park, celebrated community, creativity, and giving.
As the festive season kicked off, the market transformed the park into a twinkling wonderland, drawing crowds eager to enjoy the holiday spirit and contribute to a worthy cause.

“This market isn’t just about shopping,” said Daneel Jordan, spokesperson for the Nicarela Charity, the volunteer organisation behind the event. “It’s about creating a sense of togetherness, about building something larger than ourselves. Every purchase, and interaction, supports real people in our community who need it the most.”

Visitors were treated to more than 80 stalls brimming with handcrafted treasures – unique gifts, artisanal Christmas decorations, and one-of-a-kind finds that couldn’t be found anywhere else. Local artisans showcased their talents, creating a rich tapestry of items that captured the season’s essence. The air was filled with the sounds of Parkview Primary School’s choirs, marimba bands, and jazz ensembles, each adding a layer of festive charm to the bustling scene.

Food lovers indulged in a wide variety of culinary delights from local vendors, ensuring there was something for every taste. The beer tent and the oyster and champagne bar added a touch of luxury, inviting visitors to indulge as they strolled the park. The Kids Zone was another highlight, with activities that kept the little ones entertained while parents soaked in the festive atmosphere.

But beyond the decorations, music, and food, the true magic of the Parkview Christmas Market lay in its heart—a commitment to local charities and community upliftment. The market raised funds for six local organisations, each dedicated to supporting vulnerable groups. Among the beneficiaries are homes for orphaned girls, shelters for survivors of gender-based violence, programmes for children battling cancer, and educational scholarships for students in the Parkview area.

“We’ve seen how powerful local giving can be,” Jordan said. “This market celebrates everything possible when a community comes together. Over the years, we’ve raised more than R7 million for these causes, and the money has provided real change—safe spaces, educational opportunities, and much-needed support for children and families in need.”

The market has become an annual tradition, drawing people from all walks of life to celebrate the season while making a difference. Attendee Jane Fifeld said, “It’s wonderful to shop for gifts, but it’s even more special knowing that you’re helping those who need it most.”

The Parkview Christmas Market proved once again that the spirit of the season is alive and well in the community. It was a reminder that we can make a meaningful impact—one gift, one donation, one act of kindness at a time.
