Parktown Girls High School learner inspires awareness for neurodiverse individuals through pageantry

Laura Shiriyapenga used the Face of Health and High Schools pageant to advocate for neurodiversity and inspire change.

Laura Shiriyapenga, a Grade 10 learner at Parktown High School for Girls, took the stage at the Face of Health and High Schools pageant finale on November 30, not just as a contestant but as a voice for neurodiversity. Her participation marked a milestone in her mission to promote inclusivity and understanding for individuals with neurodiverse conditions.

Competing as one of 60 finalists, Laura excelled in categories that included introductions, swimwear, and evening gowns, culminating in a rigorous Q&A round for the top 20. Her performance and advocacy earned her a spot among the top 10 contestants.

“The pageant was an incredible experience,” Laura said. “It allowed me to highlight the importance of neurodiversity while growing in confidence and self-expression.”

Her efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Laura was honoured with the best social media presence award, acknowledging her positive and impactful online engagement. “Receiving this award was such a privilege,” she reflected. “It showed how social media can be a powerful tool for spreading awareness and driving change.”

Although she didn’t advance to the top five, Laura considers the experience invaluable. “This journey has been a stepping stone for me, and I’m excited to participate in more pageants in the future,” she shared.

Her story reminds us that beauty and purpose can go hand in hand. Her determination to foster understanding for neurodiverse individuals ensures that her advocacy will continue to shine brightly, long after the pageant lights have dimmed.
