Zoo Lake Users Committee reflects on a year of community success and transformation

The committee celebrates a festive season of progress, community spirit, and dedication to preserving one of Johannesburg's cherished parks.

With the festive season on the horizon and 2024 ended, the Zoo Lake Users Committee (ZLUC) paused to reflect on a year marked by accomplishments, a vibrant community spirit, and a dedicated effort to preserve and improve one of Johannesburg’s beloved parks. What once stood as a neglected and unsafe space, transformed into a thriving urban oasis, thanks to the tireless efforts of the ZLUC and the support of the local community.

The year began with the launch of the committee’s most ambitious project to date—a legacy initiative to mark Zoo Lake’s 120th birthday. With the support of the Johannesburg Roads Agency and the Environmental Services Department, the ZLUC proposed capping the stormwater drain opposite Jan Celliers and planting 120 indigenous trees to beautify the area. As the year wrapped up, the project kicked off, with community members and local businesses, stepping forward to lend their support.

In addition to this monumental project, the ZLUC remained focused on the park’s day-to-day upkeep and improvement. Throughout the year, regular clean-up days were organised to keep Zoo Lake pristine and welcoming for all visitors. The committee also continued its work on the park’s erosion control efforts, including laying mulch in flowerbeds to manage weeds and retain moisture. Weekly gardening sessions ensured that the park’s greenery remained lush and vibrant throughout the seasons, contributing to its reputation as a beautiful and serene space in the heart of the city.

The sports facilities at Zoo Lake have been receiving considerable attention, particularly the basketball courts, which are well-maintained by the ZLUC. These courts remain a favoured spot for casual players and dedicated athletes. Zoo Lake’s reputation as a centre for physical activity is reinforced by the introduction of a running track, used daily by local running clubs.

The ZLUC’s commitment to keeping Zoo Lake clean, green, and eco-friendly was boosted by a successful recycling programme. This initiative minimised litter and involved sorting recyclables to be sold, with the earnings reinvested into the park for continuous enhancements. The introduction of glass banks further supported recycling efforts, establishing Zoo Lake as one of the most environmentally aware parks in Johannesburg.

Over the year, the ZLUC’s partnership with Johannesburg City Parks (JCPZ) played a crucial role in the effective execution of maintenance, safety, and development initiatives. This collaboration tackled important concerns including park security, while the committee’s participation in local stakeholder meetings—such as those with Parkview SAPS, JMPD, and various security firms—helped maintain Zoo Lake as a safe and enjoyable environment for all.

Looking back, the committee celebrated the progress made in 2024. The park’s transformation into a cleaner, safer, and more beautiful space was a true reflection of the community’s dedication and generosity. Residents contributed in countless ways, from donating plants and funds to volunteering at clean-up days, ensuring that Zoo Lake continued to thrive. The positive feedback from the community was overwhelming, with many residents expressing gratitude for the improvements made throughout the year.

A special mention to Stuart Norman, nominated as the ZLUC’s Hero of the Year for his tireless efforts in cleaning up Zoo Lake. His dedication is a shining example of the passion that fuelled the park’s transformation.

The ZLUC is proud of its many successes and looks forward to upcoming projects. The committee is currently developing plans for 2025, which promise to bring more exciting initiatives for Zoo Lake. As 2025 approaches, the ZLUC is filled with hope and enthusiasm, confident that the best years for Zoo Lake are still ahead. The spirit of unity, dedication, and love for the park will fuel the committee’s efforts.
