JMPD officers observe vehicles accelerating in Parkwood

The JMPD will engage its speed enforcement section to explore possibilities for increased assistance in Parkwood.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) confirmed to the Gazette on July 1 that, on June 28, its inspectors on duty reported observing three V8 vehicles accelerating from traffic lights.

This comes after a resident from Parkwood, as well as the Community Policing Forum (CPF), complained about alleged street racing that happens in the area.

JMPD Spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla explained: “While the exhaust sounds were notably loud and echoed, creating the impression of drag racing, the officers confirmed these were instances of vehicles accelerating rapidly, rather than organised drag racing.”

He added that the JMPD took all community concerns seriously. “In response to these observations, we will be engaging our speed enforcement section to explore possibilities for increased assistance and enforcement in areas where these incidents are reported. Our goal is to ensure road safety and address noise disturbances, while accurately assessing the nature of such activities.”
