Wards 73, 74, and 81 hosted phase two of City Power’s free basic electricity registrations

The Johannesburg Ombudsman acts as a bridge between the city and residents.

Wards 73, 74, and 81 hosted phase two of City Power’s free basic electricity registrations with City Power at the Waverley Sports Club on July 23.

Although the registration morning was off to a slow start, Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett, Ward 74 councillor Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjuku, the Johannesburg Ombudsman, City of Johannesburg’s Revenue Department, and Norwood Police Station officers were present.

Kayser-Echeozonjoku explained that the aim of the open day was for City Power to assist qualifying residents to register for free basic electricity.

“Unemployed residents are eligible to register for the expanded social package. If your salary is less than R7 500 or if you lost your job, the revenue department will assist as well as with account queries.”

Johannesburg’s regional Ombudsman ambassador, Kamogelo Molepo, explained that his department was present to support City Power and to raise awareness about the department’s role.

“We help residents in terms of maladministration issues, human rights violations, abuse of power, service delivery deficiencies experienced from city officials and if the customers are not happy in terms of the alternative options the city gave them to remedy the situation they are faced with.”

Molepo added that the Johannesburg Ombudsman was the last resort to escalate matters in an impartial fashion.

Norwood Police Station’s Warrant Officer, Eric Masotsha, said their presence was to ensure the ward councillors and City of Johannesburg officials, and community members were safe during registrations.
