Norwood CPF reflects, elects, and recommits at AGM

A new leadership team has taken over the Norwood Community Policing Forum, aiming to tackle crime and social challenges while uniting the neighbourhood.

The Norwood Community Policing Forum (CPF) welcomed a new chapter at its annual general meeting (AGM), held at Melrose Arch on July 9, where residents, police officials, patrollers, and local leaders came together to reflect, elect, and recommit to community safety.

Outgoing chairperson Wayne Preston recapped major achievements, including the CPF’s celebrated anti-drug campaign and the growth of the Community in Blue patrollers. He also highlighted the launch of the Norwood Business Association and Security Forum, which helped reduce crime through collaboration and community support.

Colonel Stephen Jacobs, from SAPS, provided a sobering look at local crime, noting ongoing issues such as house robberies, illegal dumping, and homelessness. He stressed the need for more community involvement in reporting and preventing crime.

Sector leaders gave updates from their respective areas, with issues ranging from drug trafficking and aggressive car guards to hijacked buildings and social instability. A recurring theme was the call for stronger enforcement, more patrollers, and greater community participation.

Bev Finger, who leads the Community in Blue team, shared stories of their impact, from helping with emergencies and social support, to addressing troubling cases like the recent dog-skinning incident in Short Street Park. She called for more resources and volunteers to continue their vital work.

Youth desk representative Tamara Barnwell spoke of empowering young people through community events and partnerships, while outgoing committee members called for unity and ongoing commitment.

The CPF also voted in a new executive committee. Sunil Geness takes the lead as chairperson, joined by a committed team ready to serve. The new leadership plans to host an induction session, as well as hold a follow-up meeting in two weeks.

“Our strength lies in our people,” said Geness. “Together, we will make Norwood safer, stronger, and more united.”
