According to the South African National Blood Service (SANBS): “In South Africa, less than 1% of the population are active blood donors. With each unit of blood lasting only 42 days after collection, it is important for blood donors to donate regularly, and for blood service organisations to increase the donor pool.”

SANBS operates in eight out of nine provinces in South Africa (the Western Cape is serviced by the Western Cape Blood Services). It also provides crucial support to other countries in the SADC region.
Peer promoter Jadyn Willer said her role was to encourage learners to donate blood. “I am responsible for motivating my peers to donate blood if they are able to, and educating them on how their blood can help save lives.”
People who are able to donate blood are encouraged to find the nearest donor centre by visiting: Sanbs.org.za.
