A day of hope and healing at Headway Gauteng’s open day
Visitors stepped into the world of brain injury survivors in Hyde Park, discovering therapy, resilience, and the power of community.
Hyde Park was alive with warmth and connection on September 5, as Headway Gauteng opened its doors in celebration of the United Nations International Day of Charity. Far from being a traditional open day, the event offered guests a chance to experience, in a deeply personal way, what life is like for survivors of brain injury and those who walk alongside them.
The atmosphere was less about looking in from the outside and more about stepping in, shoulder-to-shoulder with members, carers, therapists, and volunteers. Guests weren’t just observers; they played games, joined group therapy sessions, and even tried their hand at exercises in speech therapy, occupational therapy, and biokinetics. For many, it was eye-opening to witness how small, everyday activities can carry enormous meaning when rebuilding lives.

A highlight of the day was the chance to join in interactive speech therapy at what Headway fondly calls the ‘peace station’. Here, laughter often punctuated the serious work of practising communication skills, while support was always close by for anyone who felt overwhelmed or triggered.
Behind the scenes, volunteers and student interns kept the day flowing, showcasing just how vital their role is in the life of Headway. Through a strong partnership with local universities, students in social work, speech therapy, and occupational therapy are able to bring their academic learning into the heart of community service. For them, the open day was not only about helping but also about learning.

The event captured the spirit of Headway Gauteng itself: interactive, supportive, and filled with resilience. Guests left not only with a greater understanding of brain injury but also with an appreciation for the everyday courage it takes to keep moving forward.
