Anna Fee, an exchange student from Germany, is looking forward to her Grade 10 journey, spending it at Parktown High School for Girls until June 2026.

The 16-year-old, who hails from a city near Hamburg in Germany, describes herself as an open and curious person.

“I love to travel and to discover new things. I wanted to participate in the exchange programme because both my father and brother had this experience in the USA.”

Anna wanted to experience a different atmosphere; hence she chose an African country.

Anna is a participant of the Youth for Understanding (YFU) high school exchange programme, which is one of the world’s largest and oldest non-profit youth exchange organisations.

Every year, YFU welcomes learners from across the world to South Africa, placing them in local host families and schools, and accompanying them through their intercultural learning journey.

The Grade 10 learner is hosted by the Knox family for the first part of her exchange, and is in the process of looking for a follow-up home.

Anna said her hope for the year was to learn more about the South African culture, and to gain new experiences that will help her later in life.

“I have already noticed how friendly and open the people are. I also hope to improve my English during my time in South Africa.”

At the same time, Anna said she was excited to share Germany’s history.

She added that, sometimes she felt that people viewed Germany in a negative light, because of its past, “but Germany is actually a very beautiful country, with a long history and rich culture. I hope I can share more of this positive side.”
