St John’s College’s Alec Loveland bowled towards 100th cap
St John's College proudly celebrated 1st team cricket player Alec Loveland, who recently earned his 100th cap – a milestone that places him among the school’s cricketing elite.
Alec made his debut for the 1st team back in 2022, while still in Lower IV, and immediately made an impact by taking three wickets in his first match. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “I was a bowler back then,” he noted, “but I like to think that I’ve developed into an all-rounder.”

His evolution as a sportsman extends beyond cricket. Alec has also represented the school in 1st team hockey for the past two years and is expected to earn several academic distinctions by year-end.
One of his most memorable moments came with his very first ball in that debut match. “I guess the coaches wanted to blood me in the last games of that year. If anything, that early success motivated me to work hard and to be ready if I received another chance.”
However, his rise wasn’t without setbacks. He was not selected at the start of Upper IV, but later broke into the side and has remained a consistent presence ever since.

Alec reached his 100th cap at the St David’s Marist Inanda Fasken Time Cricket Festival on August 28. He marked the occasion in style, going one better than his debut performance by claiming four wickets against Nelspruit on the opening day.
Looking ahead, Alec hopes to earn provincial selection in December, a natural progression for a player who has made provincial squads and teams at every junior age level.
He now becomes the 13th player in St John’s history to reach 100 appearances for the 1st team since records began. His achievement places him among the school’s finest cricketers.
