Bramley Sector 2’s CPF partners with stakeholders to tackle ongoing community challenges

Bramley Sector 2’s CPF programmes aim to build a replicable model for community safety.

In response to ongoing crime and infrastructure challenges, Bramley Sector 2’s Community Policing Forum (CPF) will launch a new programme, on November 25, aimed at protecting infrastructure, enforcing by-laws, and restoring community trust.

The aim is to build a replicable model for community safety: Structured, transparent, and owned by all who live and work in Sector 2.

Phase 1 will be a 90-day pilot programme: Safe Corridors and Park Shield.

Safe Corridors, implemented by the South African Police Service (SAPS), Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), and CAP Security, is to battle the ongoing issue of hijacking, smash-and-grabs, and robberies on the major roads. The purpose and outcomes will be to reclaim public roads via visible patrols and roadblocks, deter crime through weekend saturation policing, and deliver measurable safety improvements.

Park shield, implemented by City Parks, SAPS, and Bramley’s Sector 2 CPF, is to address the neglected parks, which become incubators for crime and health risks. The purpose and outcome for this programme is to clean-up, secure, and illuminate public parks, integrate enforcement with social work referrals, and create model public spaces for families and youth.

Phase 2 will be a 12-month integrated community safety programme, including Infrastructure Shield, to be implemented by City Power, Johannesburg’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management, and other city entities. This programme aims to address the infrastructure failure which drives lawlessness, and the purpose and outcome will be to provide rapid response to cable theft and vandalism, to secure high-risk nodes within 48 hours, and to co-ordinate enforcement for metal-theft arrests.

Following the successful implementation of the two phases, there will be six further programmes introduced. These are:

  • Safe corridors: Which aims to tackle visible crime,
  • Park Shield: Which aims to reclaim unsafe spaces,
  • Infrastructure Shield: Which aims to restore service integrity,
  • Noise and by-law enforcement: Which aims to reinforces law and order,
  • Community engagement and education: Which aims to build social cohesion, and
  • Patrol and response programme: Bridging enforcement and real-time response co-ordination, which aims to close the loop between prevention and enforcement.

Bramley Sector 2’s CPF aims that the above programmes will not only serve their purpose, but create unified law-enforcement co-ordination, measurable crime and by-law reduction, and lead to increased visibility and rapid response.
