Parkview golf day raises awareness to protect South Africa’s wildlife
The SANParks Honorary Rangers Johannesburg region aimed to raise more than R500 000 at this year's golf day, turning golfing fun into real environmental difference, funding projects such as anti-poaching operations, ranger support, and socioeconomic development in communities around the national parks.
The annual Parkview golf day, hosted by the SANParks Honorary Rangers Johannesburg region, brought together golfers, conservationists, and supporters for a day that blended sport, community, and purpose.
Players teed off, on October 16, not just for trophies, but to contribute to the protection of South Africa’s natural heritage.
Diane Pithey, chairperson of the Johannesburg Golf Committee, welcomed guests and expressed her gratitude to everyone involved. “Every swing and every bid counts. The funds raised go directly into safeguarding our country’s wildlife and wild spaces. Together, we’re helping keep our parks thriving for generations to come.”
The day featured a lively auction, with experiences such as the Skukuza Golf & Safari stay, Zebula Golf Estate & Spa, and EcoTraining Wilderness Trails on the line, offering participants the chance to enjoy the wild while giving back.

Over the past decade, the Honorary Rangers have contributed more than R708m through volunteer efforts, funding projects such as anti-poaching operations, ranger support, and socioeconomic development in communities around the national parks.
Jimmy Telle, a member of the executive committee for the SANParks Honorary Rangers, explained the importance of the day. “Just like a hole-in-one takes passion and patience, conserving our natural heritage requires time, devotion, and teamwork.”

Planning the event takes months of preparation. Diane Pithey said: “We work closely with the Parkview Golf Club, our major sponsor Tourvest, and our volunteers, to make sure everything runs smoothly. When it’s well planned, the only thing I need to worry about is the weather.”
This year, the Johannesburg region aimed to raise R500 000 to support the K9 Project Watchdog, ranger welfare, and other conservation initiatives. Pithey added: “A successful golf day means more than just a good scorecard; it means more support for our rangers, more protection for wildlife, and greater awareness of the incredible work SANParks does.”
For Tourvest, the event’s major sponsor for the third year, supporting the Honorary Rangers aligns with the company’s focus on sustainable tourism. Frans Cornelissen, Tourvest executive, said: “Supporting the Honorary Rangers is a natural fit for us. Everyone can make a difference. No matter how small the contribution, through initiatives like this, real change happens every day.”
The Parkview golf day combined thrilling shots, laughter, and a spirit of giving, showing that caring for nature can be as rewarding as it is enjoyable.
The day ended with the satisfaction that every swing, bid, and effort had contributed to a brighter future for South Africa’s national parks and wildlife.
