Ahead of Remembrance Day, the 105th Remembrance Sunday Service on November 9, hosted by Speaker of Council councillor Margaret Arnolds, in partnership with the Freedom Regiments and supported by the South African National Defence Force, drew veterans, families, and civic leaders in a moving ceremony filled with gratitude and unity.

“Remembrance is not only about mourning the past,” said Arnolds. “It is about reaffirming our commitment to peace and understanding in a world that continues to wrestle with conflict.”

The service featured a formal parade, wreath-laying, and a moment of silence, a tradition that dates back to World War I, when the guns finally fell silent on November 11, 1918. More than 25 000 South Africans lost their lives in that war and tens of thousands more in the Second World War, their legacy continuing to shape the nation’s collective memory.

As red poppies adorned the memorial and the choir’s voices lifted through the crisp air, the message was clear: remembrance is not only a reflection of the past but a call to preserve peace for generations to come.
