Wanderers, Thusong and Egoli Squash Clubs come together for friendly match

Wanderers Squash Club hosted Thusong Squash Club and Egoli Squash for a tournament that was as much about teaching new techniques as it was about having fun.

In order for players to learn from each other, and have a friendly tournament, Wanderers Club Squash hosted Thusong Squash Club and Egoli Squash on November 1.

Wanderers’ Squash coach Chris Hughes explained that he has been in charge of the Thusong development programme since 2015. “The programme benefits 40 children from Alexandra township, who visit our courts every Monday to be coached, 15–17 children at a time.

I coach alongside a coach from Egoli Squash. We invited Egoli Squash because they are a bigger team, located in the inner city, and coach approximately 800 children.” Hughes added that Thusong interacts with Egoli as much as possible, because they learn from them.

Programme facilitator at Thusong Centre Chris Ndlovu explained that sports was a healthy outlet for children from Alexandra township. “Our players are mainly from Alexandra township, where they come from different and challenged backgrounds. So, we began the sport as a healthy distraction, for them to be away from their usual environment.

We are gradually introducing the players to tournaments, for them to learn new skills and techniques. Since they have joined the sport, we can see most of them are disciplined.”

Egoli Squash coach Rowney Mabaso said friendly matches were meant to help the players gain experience, and help them become familiar with their opponents.

“Friendly matches help the players see what actual games will look like.

We are also teaching them the different required techniques for the tournaments they will participate in.”
