SAPS foils attempted hijacking near G20 patrol route

A suspect has been wounded and arrested after attempting to hijack an undercover NIU vehicle assigned to G20 security duties.

The swift response from the SAPS National Intervention Unit (NIU) stopped an attempted hijacking along Empire Road on November 21.

The officers, who were on undercover patrol for G20 security operations, were confronted when a man jumped into the road and pointed what appeared to be a firearm at their vehicle.

An NIU member fired a single shot, striking the suspect in the upper body. Police later confirmed that the weapon used was an imitation firearm.

The suspect was taken to the hospital, under police guard, and is expected to face an attempted hijacking charge once medically cleared.

SAPS has reiterated that all law enforcement agencies remain on high alert during the G20 period and will act decisively against any criminal activity.
