Gauteng’s second-quarter statistics showed an increase in kidnapping cases at Sandringham SAPS

Acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia, noted that people turned to crime where there was a lack of opportunity and excessive consumption of alcohol.

Gauteng released its first and second-quarter crime statistics on November 28 in Pretoria, reflecting on crimes that occurred during the first and second quarters of the current financial year, April 2025 – June 2025, while focusing on the second quarter statistics, July 2025 – September 2025.

The publication looked at Sandringham, Norwood, Parkview and Rosebank Police Station’s statistics, which revealed the following:

  • Sandringham recorded 16 kidnapping incidents in the recent period, indicating an increase of 23 counts compared to last year.
  • Norwood recorded a 14% decrease in contact crime, while indicating an increase of 11.,9% in property crime.
  • Parkview saw an increase of 8.7% in contact crimes and 11.4% in property-related crime.
  • Rosebank saw the contact crime category go 17 counts lower, while there was 2% decrease in community-reported serious crimes.

Before delving into the statistics, the Acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia, said he wanted to speak directly to the people of our country and the people behind the numbers affected.

“I want you to know that I understand and respect your worries about the lack of security since too many criminals escape justice.

I know what it feels like to be mugged on the streets, raided in one’s home, and my heart goes out to those whose hearts have been shattered when their loved ones are injured and killed and traumatised as a result of violent crimes.

We need better enforcement from government institutions that need to work effectively.”

Cachalia noted that it is also important to remember that many people turned to crime where there was a lack of opportunity, excessive consumption of alcohol, and exposure to drugs sold by gangs who recruit youth into a life of crime.

“As we stress the causes of crime, we should understand that crime and violence are always unacceptable,” concluded the acting Minister of Police.
