New Norwood Orchard Ratepayers Association chairperson outlines plans to strengthen safety and communication in Norwood Orchard

Jason Grove, the newly appointed Norwood Orchard Ratepayers Association chairperson, has set out key priorities focused on technology-driven safety measures, improved communication, and greater resident involvement.

The Norwood Orchard Ratepayers Association is moving in a new direction under the leadership of its recently appointed chairperson, Jason Grove, following engagements with residents and key stakeholders.

Grove said the association is prioritising improved communication, enhanced safety measures, and stronger community participation to ensure the suburb remains secure and well managed.

Central to these efforts is a new community communication system that has been rolled out to residents. The system operates through the Smart Communities app, which serves as a central platform for sharing information, reporting incidents, and managing emergencies. A third-party management company supports the system to ensure reports are monitored and followed up on.

“This is about ensuring residents are informed and that we’re able to respond quickly when issues arise,” Grove said. “The main challenge is getting everyone onto the correct communication groups, but once that is in place, the system functions very effectively.”

Safety remains a key focus, with more than 300 cameras installed throughout Norwood Orchard. The network provides real-time data analytics aimed at preventing crime, while license plate recognition cameras assist with vehicle tracking and suspect identification. These measures are supported by ongoing co-operation with private security companies and the South African Police Service.

“The focus is on prevention, rather than reaction. The technology allows us to respond more quickly and in a more co-ordinated way.”

The association is also exploring the establishment of a City Improvement District, which would involve resident contributions towards enhanced security, infrastructure maintenance, and general area upkeep. The long-term aim is to improve safety, service delivery, and the overall quality of life in the suburb.

According to Grove, the success of these initiatives depends largely on resident involvement. “Systems can be put in place, but they only work if the community is actively involved. Protecting the area requires shared responsibility.”

Residents are being encouraged to engage with the new communication platform and to participate in community-driven initiatives as the association continues to roll out its plans for Norwood Orchard.
