Illovo continues to lose gallons of water from 10-year-old pipe leak

Illovo’s 10-year-old pipe leak has eroded the road.

While Parktown West, Melville and Westdene residents have been water-deprived for nearly a month, there are suburbs like Illovo with leaking pipes that have not only resulted in gallons of wasted clean water but also eroded roads.

A reporter visited Fort Road on February 10 with Ward 74 councillor, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku and the acting head of the the Corlett Drive Improvement Precinct, Mark Pencharz.

Pencharz said that as a resident who takes frequent walks, he never missed what went on in the area.

“This leak’s been around for 10 to 15 years that I’ve noticed, and it’s a serious leak that changes from being a dribble to a flow, has eroded the roads systematically over time, adding to what looks like urban decay. “

He added that it was upsetting to see water leaking, especially in a country where there is a scarcity of water.

Kayser-Echeozonjoku said it was unacceptable that the leak had gone on for as long as it had and would escalate the matter to Johannesburg Water’s regional director.

The publication sent questions to Johannesburg Water and had not received a response, but will continue following up.
