UPDATE: Roedean apologises, head resigns after Linksfield match fallout
Roedean School (SA) has confirmed the immediate resignation of its head of senior school, Phuti Mogale, and issued a formal apology to King David Linksfield following the controversial cancellation of a tennis match that sparked widespread debate.
Roedean School (SA) has announced that the head of its senior school, Phuti Mogale, has resigned with immediate effect, as the board moves to address the fallout from the cancellation of a tennis fixture against King David Linksfield.
The decision follows a tense and emotionally charged period for both school communities, after the abrupt cancellation of the match earlier this month reignited public discussion around inclusion, identity, and discrimination in schools.
In a letter sent to parents, alumni, and the broader Roedean community, the board confirmed that it had accepted Mogale’s resignation and outlined the steps being taken to investigate how the decision was made.

An independent forensic investigation team has been appointed to conduct a two-phase review. The first phase focuses on establishing a clear and factual sequence of events surrounding the cancellation of the tennis fixture, with a formal report expected imminently. The second phase will examine broader governance, policy, and decision-making processes and is expected to conclude within two weeks.
“The purpose of this process is to ensure that a single, verified account of events is established and that any governance or procedural failures are properly addressed,” the board said.
In a strongly worded apology, the board acknowledged the deep hurt caused by the cancellation and conceded that the decision was taken without its knowledge. It said the move did not reflect the values of Roedean’s wider community, including its pupils, parents, staff, alumni, and governors.
The board added that flaws in the decision-making and communication process had resulted in confusion within the school and distress beyond it.
“For this, we are sincerely sorry,” the statement read.

Reaffirming the school’s values, the board said Roedean “unequivocally rejects antisemitism and all forms of unfair discrimination” and remains committed to fostering a culture of respect, dignity, and inclusion.
The school has formally communicated its apology to King David Linksfield and remains in active engagement with its leadership. Both schools have expressed a commitment to constructive dialogue and to rebuilding trust, with hopes of rescheduling the tennis fixture.
The board said that once the initial phase of the investigation is complete, a verified account of events and any corrective governance measures will be shared with parents.
“Rebuilding trust will require transparency, accountability, and consistency from the board and leadership,” the statement concluded. “That work is underway.”
The developments mark a significant turning point in a saga that has resonated far beyond the two schools involved, highlighting the powerful role that sport, dialogue, and leadership play in shaping school communities and social cohesion.
